Ever since the establishment of organised fire brigades here in Britain there have been constant changes. In 1948 following the war time National Fire Service, the fire brigades in England, Scotland and Wales were organised into roughly what they are today. Approximately 150 odd fire brigades came into existence and were organised into Counties, Cities and County Boroughs. County Boroughs are rather like the American townships that are not incorporated as Cities, although some of these County Boroughs become Cities later in the twentieth Century. In England a true City has to have a Cathedral, but there were some County Boroughs that had a Cathedral. Recently a couple of Cities have been established and have not got a Cathedral. Below is a complete list of fire brigades in England, Scotland and Wales. Due to several changes since 1948 dates when the brigades were in existence are shown together with where they went and the date. Now, in 2002/2003 there are 63 brigades with Northern Ireland Fire Authority making a total of 64 Fire Brigades in the United Kingdom. |
